Lesvos the charming “green beauty”
Lesvos also known as Mytilini,
one of the 22 European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) seems fare away from overcrowded tourist destinations.
The island with a population of less than 80,000 and a coastline of over 300km offers space, peace and tranquillity. Surprising the green of pines, the silver of olive groves and lush parts of the island. Lesbos is verdant, aptly named Emerald Island, with a greater surprising variety of flora than can be expected.
Eleven million olive trees cover 40% of the island, some fruit trees. Forests of mediterranean pines, chestnut trees and some oaks occupy 20%, the remainder is scrub, wetland grassland and very little urban. In contrast bizarre rock formations, lava fields and the monument of nature the “petrified forrest”. Original villages, hidden monasteries, isolated coves, empty beaches, attractive old harbours, medieval castles, all this and more are to be found on this, one, island of Lesvos.
“Walking on Lesvos” invites you to explore and discover this “magic”island.
Over 11 million olive trees
are counted on the island and therewith Lesvos becomes the second importand region of olive oil produktion in Greece.
Lesvos olive oil is known for its high quality and low acidity.
Two large gulfs cutting deep into the landscape give the Island it’s unusual form and add miles to it’s coastline.
The island divided as it is by these gulfs has differing landscapes. In the south dominated by the Olympos mountain range (marple/sleight) and to the north by the Lepetimnos range (basalt, lava, sandstone).
Our routes are often overlooked by one or other of these land marks which allow impressive views as we wind our way through nature, remote mountain villages, ruins, a castle or through an attractive fisher harbour with its one or more tavernas. These offer an opportunity to take a well earned rest whilst enjoying traditional homemade Greek recepies .
over 5000 years of history
Αrchaeological excavations lead by Winifred Lamb in the 1930, provided evidence of its almost uninterrupted habitation since the Neolithic period and its similarity to the Trojan and Mycenaean civilization. Lesvos is mentioned in the Honeric epics- Achilles attacked the island. Terpander, Alkaeos,Sappho- worlds first female poet, Arsitoteles, Theoprast- father of botany, Alexander the great, the Persians, the Romans… to mention only some have left their footprints .
Few and only partly excavated settlements are to be seen as “proof for the eye” for such a long and rich history, in the direct neighbourhood the of Troy, Assos and Pergamon. Some remains of the population and cultural life give an idealike we can see, today in the poor ruins, of Mytilinis ancient theater having had than over 10.000 seats.
Lesvos asks the intrested visitor too look a little closer into historical sources. Sappho, female antiquities earliest poet., Aristoteles, Therapandos, Arion, Theophrast, Orpheus and others let us understand what important role the island must have played. Castles and the many monasteries hidden away deep in the countryside are widdnesses of a bygone mideval aera. The magic of the island lets today authors, poets and artists chose to make Lesvos their second home.
On our tours
we meet up with the islands fauna and flora, history, mhythlogie, stories and myt. The lagoon of Kaloni, a favourite stop over for migrating birds and bird watchers paradiese with Flamingos, herons, storks, eagles and countless song- and water birds adds on as the “petrified forest” in the west.
In spring wild flowers blossom into a scented sea of colour and in late summer and autumn the golden sunlight turns the landscape into a blaze of gold.
All this surrounded by the ever blue Aegean Sea is the backdrop of our hikes.
I would be pleased to show you this secret pearl on tiptoes and unknown ways.
